Attention one and all the SOMN Duluth Special Olympics Bowling Program will be starting at the Incline Station August 14, 2011.

There will be 2 sessions 10:30am and 1pm. The cost is $6.00, you must PRE REGISTER on the Hotline prior to attending practice.

Dear Athletes, Families, Service Providers

For updates please consult the Special Olympics Minnesota Duluth Hotline 260-9529. Each month there will also be an email “blast” report sent as well. Throughout sports a copy of the email “blast” reports will be available to view at the practices as well.

Washington Center Volunteer Clean Up: Athletes who utilize the Washington Center during the Winter will be given an opportunity to “pay with sweat” on Thursday Nights August through September 5pm to 6pm. If lots of people show up then the time would be cut down considerably. However, showing up on time will be how athletes earn this “pay with sweat” opportunity. There are 8 opportunities left, athletes that participate in the winter sports (basketball, floor hockey) should make it to 6 out of the remaining 8 events.

Bowling: starts at the Incline Station Sunday, August 14^th, Two Sessions will be offered 10:30am and 1:00pm. Cost is $6.00 per time. There will be two meets held in the Duluth Area October 15^th SOMN Area 3 Bowling Meet and October 29^th.SOMN Regional Bowling Meet. Criteria to attend the SOMN Area 3 bowling meet includes: attending practices, showing being ready to start on time, and follow through at practices. All athletes wanting to participate must sign up on the SOMN hotline by August 10^th. 260-9529.

Poly Hockey: This will start in October 2011 at the Washington Center. Athletes should sign up on thehotline no later than September 31, 2011. Cost to participate at the Washington Center will be $3.00 per practice at the Washington Center for those who do not participate in the Washington Center Cleanup.

Basketball: This will start in November 2011 at the Washington Center. Athletes should sign up on thehotline no later than October 31, 2011.

Cost to participate at the Washington Center will be $3.00 per practice at the Washington Center for those who do not participate in the Washington Center Cleanup.

Fundraising Event to start in September 2011: There will be a fundraising project set up for this fall. Athletes are encouraged to participate in the fundraising event to assist with keeping the program going as well as setting your personal fee payment to attend State Games.

Medical Form Update Info

Here is some information in regards to filling out Medical Forms. Please follow all instructions and contact Lynn Landstrom with any questions.

- Please use a black pen with dark ink to fill out all forms. We need to copy and scan them and other inks do not work as well.

- Include the athletes name on all pages (in case they get separated from each other).

- Athletes MUST have a fully completed and up to date form on file before beginning practice with the Duluth All Stars. NO EXCEPTIONS! If your form becomes out of date, even in the middle of a sport, you must have an up to date one on file before you can continue with practices.

- Please follow the attached checklist for how to fill out the form properly so your athlete can participate in their sport.

1. Section A - Demographics - Athlete's full name, mailing address, telephone number and email (if an athlete doesn't have their own email, please provide a staff or family member's as we do not do mailing for newsletters and information anymore. All of our information is either emailed or available on our blogspot and soon to be website); Parent/Guardian or Emergency contact information (name and phone number); Health/Accident Insurance Company (name and policy number)

2. Section B - Health - Make sure that all boxes are either checked with a yes or a no; Tetnus immunization date; Current medications filled out (if applicable - also please let Lynn know if medications change even if the form is up to date); Guardian's signature and date (if athlete is their own guardian they must sign here);

3. Sections C, D and E - Must be completed by a physician and be signed and dated by said physician.

4. Consent form - Athlete's name and birth date; Section A if first box is checked - must have a witness signature; Section B must be completed by guardian if second box is checked in Section A and must be signed and dated.

5. Healthy Athlete - Athlete's name and birth date; if athlete is over 18, their signature is needed or if under 18, guardian's signature is needed; date of form completion.

Fall Bowling Sign Ups

It's that time of year to start thinking about fall bowling. Please call the hotline 218-260-9529 to register for individual bowling by AUGUST 24. ALL Athletes MUST register by calling the hotline. This is so paperwork can be on file so you can begin practice the next week.

The following sessions are available (and start on August 29):

- Morning session - athletes must be signed in and have paid their fees by 9:30 a.m. Be on the lanes at 9:45 a.m. for practice.

- Noon session - athletes must be signed in and have paid their fees by 12 noon. Be on the lanes at 12:15 p.m. for practice.

The cost is $6 per week.

Congratulations to Jim Davis!
Jim has been selected as the Distinguished ALPS Athlete of the Year. Jim will be presented his award at the annual Distinguished Service Awards at the Special Olympics Minnesota Leadership Conference, held mid-January.

Jim has served as athlete liaison on the Local Sports Management Team, served as coordinator for the local Global Messenger Program, coached Bowling, as well as been instrumental in hosting our annual Sh Boom Fundraiser Dance, among other great qualities. Congratulations again to Jim!!

Fundraising Opportunities and the Plunge!

Fundraising activities.
In 2010 there will be TWO activities. A.) Coaches and Calzones at Old Chicago (much like the Cops and Lobsters of the old days with Red Lobster) Coaches and Global Messengers will be encouraged to participate. This is on January 9th, 2010 at Old Chicago.

At the same time we will also be recruiting Plunging members for the Duluth All-stars Athletes and Fans Team (this is posted on the SOMN website) If you are interested in plunging we ask that you raise $75.00 You do not have to plunge, only if you want to, however, by raising that $75.00 a 1/3 of that stays with the Duluth Allstars team. However, you MUST to register under the Duluth All-stars Athletes and Fans online (going through the SOMN website for Polar Bear Plunges) or contact Bert for more help/information. Remember, the more people we get to register under our team, the more money that stays locally for OUR team. Money raised by each athlete for the plunge will count towards their fundraising efforts and will affect the amount they pay for state/regional game trips. Duluth's Polar Bear Plunge is scheduled for February 20!

Winter Sports Sign Ups

Powerlifting - Starts Monday, January 11 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on the 3rd floor of the YMCA. If you are not a member of the YMCA, there will be a $1.00 per time charge. Practices will be held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Unified Bowling - Registration will be held on Sunday, January 3 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Incline Station and get a coupon to bowl a FREE game. League practice will begin on Sunday, January 10. Cost will be $6 per person per week (shoes and 3 games of bowling).
Swimming - Starts Sunday, January 10 from 10 a.m. - 12 noon. Practice will be held at the YMCA. (DO NOT show up unless you have signed up by calling the hotline and have received a confirmation call). If you are not a member of the YMCA, there will be a charge.
Poly Hockey -Practices continue starting January 10 at the Washington Center from 12:30 p.m.-2 p.m.
Basketball - Practices will start on Sunday, January 10 at the Washington Center from 2 p.m.-3:30 p.m. Full court, half-court and skills will be offered.
Skiing - To be Determined. Please contact the hotline and more information will be given to those interested in skiing.

All athletes must contact the hotline at 218-260-9529 to register for their sports. All athletes must also have current forms on file or they will not be allowed to participate at practices.

Powerlifting - will be starting soon. Please call to register and when practices start you will be contacted.

Swimming - will be starting in January.

Floor Hockey - Team and Skill Levels - practice will start on Sunday, Dec. 6 at the Washington Center. Time to be decided.

Alpine (Downhill) Skiing - Register now and then wait for the snow to fall.

Nordic (Cross-Country) Skiing - If there is enough interest, this sport will be added back onto our schedule. Please call the hotline if you are interested.

Snowboarding - We have a coach interested, any athletes??

Basketball - Full, Half-Court and Skill Levels - will be starting in January.

Unified Bowling - Grab a partner and sign up for Unified Bowling. Starts in January at the Incline Station.

Coach Kevin named Volunteer of the Year

Duluth's Poly Hockey, Track, Golf and Ski coach Kevin Sternal was selected as 2008 Volunteer for the State of Minnesota Special Olympics. Kevin also serves as a mentor to Dave Lane for the Global Messengers program. Dave presented Kevin his award at the Distinguished Services Awards Banquet in January. Congratulation Kevin and thanks for all you do for the Duluth All Stars!

It's time to start thinking about winter sports. Please remember to call the hotline to register for your sports.

Powerlifting is currently underway on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays at the YMCA.
Floor Hockey is currently underway and practices on Sundays at the Washington Center.
Downhill Skiing will be starting practices soon. Both the Area 3 and Regional Games will be held in January.
Unified Bowling will be starting practices on Sundays, starting in January.
The dates for swimming and basketball have not been confirmed, but please call the hotline to get registered for these sports.

Remember, if you do not have a current physical form and other forms on file you will NOT be allowed to practice. (Calling to register will assist with knowing if your forms are current.)

Attention!!
In order to participate in a sport, you must first have an UP-TO-DATE physical on file. You must also call the hotline to register for ALL sports. Be sure to include a phone number and sports that you are signing up for. Your information will then be forwarded to your coach and they will contact you if any additional information is needed. Your coach will also contact you in regards to practice times/days and equipment needed.
~~~ In accordance with Special Olympics International rules, no athlete will be allowed to attend or practice a sport unless then have registered through our email and have an up-to-date physical on file and ON SITE! (If you register and receive a confirmation from your coach, your phyiscal form will be on site with the Head Coach.)
